"Reading should not be presented as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift."Kate Dicamillo
Homework
Reading- There will be no weekly reading log, but I strongly encourage creating a routine of nightly reading, whether it is online or in a text from school or home. Students should be reading approximately 100 minutes per week. In the past I have suggested 20 minutes each week night.
Word Study/Spelling- Your child will have a set of 14 words each week to learn how to spell. Word Study homework will consist of a list of various spelling activities that your child will use each week to help them learn the spelling of their words. Many of the activities do not require materials and may incorporate movement. A parent will have to initial and indicate the 2 activities that are done each week in their child's word study notebook.
Math- homework will consist of occasional workbook pages (1-3 per week) that reinforce skills previously taught, and will be due the following by Friday. Math games will also be part of math homework this year. The math games will include all materials, directions, and a comment sheet to play fun and reinforcing games. You child will have played each game before they go home. The students LOVED this last year and played multiple times with siblings, parents, and other family members before returning the games! Math games will be due one week after they are given.
Current Events- One current event will be due by the Friday of the first full week of each month. See the current event page for more info.
Wonderboxes- This is a fun and student driven homework that will also be due by the Friday of the first full week of each month. This will also begin in October. Essentially your child will have to find one small item to share each month that fits a monthly theme and fits in a small box that is 4X4 inches. Themes include something red, science, Nature, family…etc. They will have a simple share sheet that goes along with it.
Projects- There will be a few projects that will go home throughout the year. Each project comes with specific directions and may or may not involve a specific book to be read. The first project (coming home soon!) is a TIME CAPSULE project. Your child will create a time capsule, fill it with various things and say goodbye to it until June! The students LOVE this project each year.
